VyOS
VyOS in an open source Linux-based operating system sold and distributed by Sentrium corporations. It is geared toward IT specialists and network administrators for the purpose of securing network and company data. VyOS is capable of running on a physical platform or on a virtual one. It includes a massively configurable firewall, works well with a VPN, and employs a software based network routing solution. Unlike other open source solutions, VyOS can manage advanced network routing features such as command line interfaces and dynamic routing protocols. VyOS effectively brings together a number of network security tools and unifies them through a single command line interface and Linux OS environment. Network administrators will appreciate being to configure it like an old school hardware firewall. The software is fully open source and forkable.

VyOS is an excellent solution for network admins that really know what they’re doing. The command line interface centralizes control but can be clunky to work with for a newer generation of IT specialists. VyOS is a coder enthusiast’s paradise, but won’t be suitable for all IT staffs. As open source software it’s free to use and change, but for businesses that want to employ it as a solution you’ll need an extremely well trained network admin to get the most out of it. While VyOS offers a stable distribution and continually finds and updates bugs in the code, if you want Sentrium to work for you as an extension of your IT department, that will have to be paid for separately. They do staff one of the original coders for VyOS. It’s an excellent program if you have the programming chops to make it work for you. For users that are looking for a good open source firewall, pfSense may provide a better solution. VyOS is fundamentally a router software with a powerful built-in firewall. Other options for firewalls are going to be easier to configure and get the hang of. Still, from a pure coding standpoint, VyOS offers an extremely alluring and powerful solution.
