BitLord
BitLord is a torrent streaming service that uses peer-to-peer file transfer to download data. It's a direct competitor to well-known services like uTorrent, Limewire and Frostwire. Torrents have a bit of an infamous reputation of being the favored method of downloading pirated software. Napster is a famous example of a torrenting program used to download copyrighted music and videos. One obtains a torrent file by downloading it directly from web sites like The Pirate Bay or online forums. Once downloaded, the torrent file can be opened by an application, like BitLord. The torrent file tells BitLord how to find servers and subsequently file locations on the Internet. The main benefit of torrents over traditional point-to-point downloading is that the speed is dramatically faster since the user is downloading from many sources at once. Data transfer is allocated to the sources at the same time, at which point the sources simultaneously send different parts of a file. It's like an online assembly line for creating a file on a user's hard drive.
- Fast downloading of torrent files
- Streams videos directly on the software or to Chromecast
- Free of cost to download and use
- Alternative to market dominating software like uTorrent
- No mobile device support
- Despite being free, the software is not open source
- Currently no Chromecast support for Mac users
If the Internet is the information super highway, then torrents are the Ferraris that drive on it. Torrenting remains the fastest way to transfer data over the Internet, and surprisingly, it's been that way for over two decades. As long as it's fast and not broken, software like BitLord sees no reason to fix it. BitLord is a minimal torrent processing software with support for both Windows and Mac users. What makes it different is its focus on visual media. It features a built-in player for users to watch videos as they are downloading rather than wait for the entire file transfer to complete. It also goes a step further and features Chromecast integration, setting it apart from some of the major torrent software. The player also features video subtitles in many languages.
